LIBERO D’ORSI ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM

The Libero D’Orsi Archaeological Museum is located in the Royal Palace of Quisisana, where a rich collection of archaeological finds from the ancient Roman villas of Stabiae is on display. Stabiae was a place of vacation and wellbeing for patricians, struck by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

The artifacts were first discovered by Bourbon explorers in the 18th century and later by the principal and archaeologist Libero D’Orsi (after whom the museum is named) starting from 1950. The refined decorative apparatuses of the villas of Stabiae and those of its age are present; also preserved are the splendid frescoes, which depict landscape scenes, deities, mythological characters, and faces.

The archaeological museum, with large digitized and virtual areas, allows visitors to relive the eruption of the time and map the geographical layout of the territory before the eruption. The Museum is located on the panoramic road of Castellammare di Stabia, 7 minutes away from the Stabia Main Port.
